Our Goal:
To examined the development and distribution needs of Maryland's food industry, and the most effective use of the Authority's development and management resources to meet those needs.

Since its creation by an Act of Maryland Legislature in 1967, the MFCA has become a national and international model for the development and creation of consolidated, wholesale food distribution facilities.

Directed by a 12 member Executive Board, appointed by the Governor of the State of Maryland, the MFCA symbolizes the unique success and economic benefits that can be realized by the foresight of Maryland's public officials, when combined with the energy and determination of entrepreneurs in private industry. The MFCA has overseen the development and operations of one of the most extensive food distribution facilities anywhere in the United States.

In 1989, the Maryland legislature, building on an already successful record of public/private partnership, extended the jurisdiction of the MFCA statewide.

The most visible symbol of the public/private partnership efforts is the 400(+/-) acre Maryland Food Center located in Jessup, Maryland. The Maryland Food Center is home to such companies as Giant Food, SYSCO Food Services of Baltimore, T.A. Baltimore South, Merchants Terminal, BTS Distribution Centers, Terminal Corporation and the Maryland Wholesale Produce and Seafood Markets. There are approximately 3,500 Marylanders employed at the Food Center. Virtually every category of fruit, vegetables and seafood are processed, packaged and distributed through the Maryland Food Center into the Mid-Atlantic region.

In addition, many ancillary service companies that have located at the Maryland Food Center, in the areas of trucking and transportation, hotel, banking, restaurant and retail operations, have found the Maryland Food Center to be an ideal location.
